He started his career in 1998 with BAT Zimbabwe Limited, starting as an accounts clerk and rose to become the Financial Accountant in 2001. Driven by the passion for new challenges, he moved to the Sara-Lee Group, trading in Zimbabwe as Kiwi Brands (Pvt) Ltd, as a Regional Accountant responsible for Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. He was responsible for the preparation and consolidation of the three entities’ financials and reporting to South Africa. During this time, various depots were created to assist with quick product distribution which was a source of revenue growth in the Company. He was instrumental in developing appropriate and adequate procedures to safeguard the entire business and in particular the depot operations.
In 2005, Farai got an offer from the Lafarge Group, then trading in Zimbabwe as Circle Cement Limited. He was appointed Chief Accountant reporting to the Finance Director. In 2008, he was promoted to become Chief Finance Officer responsible for financial strategy development and implementation. In 2010, Farai was further promoted to become the Finance Director of Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe Limited. He managed Lafarge’s finances through the most difficult times of hyperinflation as the organisation remained afloat. Internal controls were upheld, business systems automation was enhanced and profit margins improved from as low as 5% to 20%. He also managed the transition from the Zimbabwe dollar to the multicurrency regime. He left Lafarge in April 2015 after being head hunted by Dangote Cement Industries, with an assignment in Ethiopia as the Country CFO. As he was settling in with Dangote, he was offered a new role back home by Zimpapers as the Finance Director, a position that he gladly accepted and took the offer as he wanted to be part of the solution to the challenges faced by the country. Farai is a Zimbabwean national by birth and married to Ottilia. The couple is blessed with three children, two boys Dylan (16yrs), Divine (11yrs) and a girl, Praise (7yrs).
A current legal partner at a private law firm, she has been recipient of the University of Zimbabwe Book Prize 2004–5 and Kellogg Foundation Scholarship for Exchange Program with Bard College New York and University of Cape Town, 2005.
